Established in 2019, this annual award honors leadership excellence in the field of Cellular and Molecular Bioengineering (CMBE) and is named in memory and honor of Christopher R. Jacobs, PhD.

Dr. Jacobs was a beloved professor of biomedical engineering at Columbia University since 2008 and a leader in the field of biomechanics, widely recognized for his seminal research in bone cellular mechano-transduction and computational biomechanics. In addition to teaching and research, he was also an author, lecturer, and avid outdoorsman who loved to golf, ski, hike and climb mountains.

The author of many papers, Jacobs co-authored an acclaimed textbook, “Introduction to Cell Mechanics and Mechanobiology,” with Hayden Huang and Ronald Y. Kwon. As director of the Cell and Molecular Biomechanics Lab at Columbia, his research aided in developing new therapies for age-related bone loss and osteoporosis. Prior to Columbia, Jacobs taught at Stanford University and at Penn State University.

Following his passing, BMES-CMBE established an award in Dr. Jacobs' honor. In honor of the decade long service to the CMBE community, and for championing and leading the efforts to create a Scientific Interest Group (SIG) in Cellular and Molecular Bioengineering under the umbrella of the BMES parent organization, this award was named in honor of Christopher Jacobs, Ph.D. (Read more here).

Earlier this year the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Columbia University made a generous donation to the award endowment fund. “BMES-CMBE is delighted to receive the generous donation from Columbia BME Department. The donation is a major step forward for establishing the longevity of this award through the creation of an endowment fund. We look forward to reaching our fundraising goal, and welcome all donations at any level” said Deborah Leckband, PhD, chair of the CMBE Scientific interest group.
