Christopher R. Jacobs, Ph.D.
Established in 2019, this annual award honors leadership excellence in the field of Cellular and Molecular Bioengineering (CMBE) and is named in memory and honor of Christopher R. Jacobs, PhD.
Dr. Jacobs was a beloved professor of biomedical engineering at Columbia University since 2008 and a leader in the field of biomechanics, widely recognized for his seminal research in bone cellular mechano-transduction and computational biomechanics. In addition to teaching and research, he was also an author, lecturer, and avid outdoorsman who loved to golf, ski, hike and climb mountains.
The author of many papers, Jacobs co-authored an acclaimed textbook, “Introduction to Cell Mechanics and Mechanobiology,” with Hayden Huang and Ronald Y. Kwon. As director of the Cell and Molecular Biomechanics Lab at Columbia, his research aided in developing new therapies for age-related bone loss and osteoporosis. Prior to Columbia, Jacobs taught at Stanford University and at Penn State University.
This award is in honor of Professor Shu Chien, MD, Ph.D., past President of the BMES. Dr. Chien is well recognized as one of the foremost pioneers and educators in biomedical engineering worldwide. His vision and leadership to integrate biomedical engineering with cardiovascular physiology and molecular cell biology have greatly impacted the field of Cellular and Molecular Bioengineering.
This Award is bestowed upon an individual who has demonstrated meritorious contributions to the field of cellular and molecular bioengineering. These contributions will include groundbreaking scientific advances in the field of cell and molecular bioengineering, the development of programs to support this emerging field, and the mentoring and training of the next generation of scientists working in our field.
Christopher Jacobs Award for Excellence in Leadership
This award is named in memory and honor of Christopher R. Jacobs, Ph.D., and shall be presented in recognition of leadership excellence in the Cellular and Molecular Bioengineering community. Leadership is broadly defined and includes leadership in education, service, and publication/dissemination of the CMBE field. Dedicated service will also be recognized based on time and level of involvement in various programs and activities at, typically, regional or international levels. Contributions should emphasize the awardee's dedication to the cause and needs of the Cellular and Molecular Bioengineering community, willingness to give time and effort, and the ability to draw together varied resources to affect change in the community.
